On me laptop (2 yrs) and one desktop (3 yrs) and one desktop (3 mos.),
5.0.14 network runtime, all running XP Pro with SP2, I set the
default beep on each cpu to a different sound. With beep set in
filePro, the laptop sounds through its speakers, the desktops sound
through the speakers in the flat panel monitor speakers on each cpu.

The old BEEP hasn't worked for years in a Windows
Environment... not that I know of or how to. It still works in
UNIX/SCO for sure, I use it all over the place to ALERT the
user to a problem. Maybe theres somebody on the fplist using
SOUNDS somehow to aggravate/stimulate a typical USER. (laugh)

The beep works in the command prompt of Windows XP Professional.
I just tested it. And it is coming from the speaker on the case
and not the sound card. Many PC's seem not to have a speaker
anymore.
I typed echo ^G and it beeped.

Mine does not beep and I guess I have too many disabled with NONE as the
sound choice. I get tired of all those crazy sounds. I just leave the
ones that help me.
But I think this line of investigation might give you the info you want.
