Herbert Wilton Winkelmann passed away on April 5, 2024 at the age of 82
after several years of poor health. He was the son of the late Herbert
Gustav Winkelmann and Phoebe (Booth) Winkelmann. He is survived by his
wife, Victoria Winkelmann, his four children, Laura Brody, Steven
Winkelmann, Liz Winkelmann, and Thomas Winkelmann as well as 6
grandchildren, Alex Brody, Evan Brody, Katie Brody, Matthew Brody, Brendan
McGuigan and Tyler McGuigan.
Herbert was a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School class of 1960. He
married Victoria 62 years ago this month.
He learned the heating and air conditioning business as a technician at
Lakeland Merit Armstrong. He soon became the guy who was able to fix the
units that the other technicians had difficulty fixing. After a few years,
he started his own business, repairing and installing oil boilers and air
conditioners for the next 20 years. He became a teacher at BOCES,
instructing new students in the heating and air conditioning trade for
several years.
Herb and Vicky purchased the most dilapidated buildings in Verplanck and
with the help of his family, they renovated them into some of the nicer
buildings in Verplanck.
He was an avid student of World War II all his life. His children claim
that he has watched every TV documentary on the subject.
He learned to cook by watching Food TV programs. He and his son-in-law, Ken
Brody, developed a rib recipe that was better than anything from any BBQ
joint we ever visited.
His wake will be held at Carter's Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 PM and
7-9 PM, followed by cremation.
