I second this recommendation.
I don't remember if I'm inventing this or remembering it but the reason
it's worth it are things like reading the map files to generate nice
header records with all the field names besides just the data itself. I
don't have a copy to double check myself, it was a former employers copy
and since I'm a programmer myself I didn't really need it, but the
company had a copy and I checked it out and it was good and would be
perfect for a job just like this.
And Jeff has posted to the list as recently as Jan so should be no problem.
