Import field length limit?

Is there a limit how many characters can be in an import field?  This is an
import of a pipe delimited file with about 80 fields, some of which can be
extremely long

5.6.10R4 on CentOS for clarity

It seems I've encountered an issue with some pretty long import field
lengths - if there is a limit, what is the limit?
