Everyone's thinking about it poorly.
The elegant solution to this problem is to write a pseudo-printer
driver. Look at Nitro PDF...print directly to PDF. That's a printer
driver. There's no reason you can't write a driver to convert from PCL
5 to whatever the hell the new host-based printers use, and just use
that driver. The architecture remains the same; you just switch
printers and use the correct driver for it.
All it takes is time and money. That's the answer to every technical
question: How much do you want to spend to make the problem go away?
