I think Ken is referring to PFMBTO, which I guess stands for PF Message Box Time Out, which sure sounds like what you are experiencing.

But what are the chances of that environmental variable getting set on your server without you knowing about it?

There is an environment variable that controls error messages auto closing check and see if there is something similar for msgbox or that variable impacts msgbox.
