Bill, - Sad news... maybe you would post this on the FP List for me.

I just received this from John Esak who asked me to post to the list.

==================

Hi Bill,

Two days ago I tried calling Jim at our usual time. We talk twice a day
usually.  He didn’t answer.  The next morning, yesterday, I called again
after he walks his dogs at about 8am in the morning.  Still, no answer
Called about 4 times more all day yesterday, no answer.

Today, when I again got no answer on the morning call, I phoned up the
RCMP office about 7 blocks from Jim’s house.

They said they would send someone around to do a  “check well being” for
me.  About 30 minutes later, a constable calls me and says, he is sorry
, but the gentleman did not answer his door.  So, I said… ok then, he
must have gone somewhere… although it’s odd that he didn’t mention it to
me. Then just for no reason, I asked the policeman, “His car was not
there, right?”  The man says, no, his car **was** there.  I said what
about the dogs? Jim has two dogs!  He said, “Yes, they were in there
barking, but the man didn’t answer.”

I literally shouted at the guy, “You’ve got to get in there!  The man is
obviously incapacitated or worse…” It was as if I woke the cop up… out
of a daze or something… he said, “OH, you’re right… I’ll go back there.”
I told him to call me as soon as he knew what was happening.

He called me about 30  minutes ago to tell me that he found Jim dead in
his house. I asked if he was in bed, and all the constable would say is,
“He died peacefully sir.”

I thought I would send this out to the fP list, but I have not had
membership on that forum for a very long time, and hoped maybe you would
put this out there for me.

You know I used to live near Les Paul, and after his good friend and
assistant died, I used to help him in his studio from time to time. He
once told me that you know when you’re growing old when all your friends
begin to die off. Sadly, I have been through a good number of those
experiences now, and Jim Asman was easily my **best** friend for the
past 40 years since I met him on the CompuServe Forum. This drops my
short list of BFF’s to less than I can count on the fingers of one hand.

P.S. I managed to reach Jim’s only son, Charlie… so you can put this out
on the list immediately. I will follow up with any funeral arrangements
that are forthcoming.
