So my the logical next question....is that the number of actual used
records, or the total records in the file including deleted records that
have not yet been reused?

It's numrecs(lookup_file_name), so you can use n =
numrecs(lookup_file_name) and n will be equal to the number of records in
the lookup file or use - for the current file.
