It all comes back to what you are trying to do.
IF this is a public internet facing webpage, and you just need it to work,  I would recommend you look at something like OneGate (or whatever he recommends)
IF this is on a private network with no expectation of exploits and you just are wanting to pull data and this is a hobby project, I have used perl (and other p* languages) to read and write data into filePro.

I got my initial book learning from Nancy. Not sure if her pages are still up. At worse they could be found in the wayback machine.
