I am going to guess you have more than 7 bit characters, so what is stored on the disk doesn't have ascii values between  32 and 127 in each memory location.

you need to get a hex dump of the data to really see what is going on, as in do you have codepage 437 (IBM PC) characters or more likely UTF-8 which can be up to four bytes per character.
