files in /u/appl/fp/tmp

In the midst of copying files to new server and I see there are a TON (like
over 15,000) files located in /u/appl/fp/tmp that are all similarly named
something like    srtkx7tMD etc

Do these files need to be maintained? What are these for, some sort of log
files?
Never noticed them before
