New server migration - part 2

So after my previous post where Mark recommended to me to make file systems
xfs, last night I started copying data to the new server
I initially started by wanting to copy /appl/fpmerge directory to new
server
So I cd to /appl
scp -r fpmerge/ root at newhost:/u/appl/
It ran for a bit and then I noticed I kept seeing the same file names over
and over
So I killed the scp and looked on new server and noticed it nested the
/appl/fpmerge directory multiple times....?
Meaning, I could cd to /appl/fpmerge, and /appl/fpmerge/fpmerge and
/appl/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge and so on....
So like a dummy I figured it must have been the xfs file system I changed
post install (stupid me)
So I did a FRESH install on new server this morning of Centos 7 and made
the file systems xfs from the beginning
Started the same scp command above with the same exact result....
So, then I looked on my EXISTING server, and sure enough that's what I have
on my current server....???
I've never seen this before in my life
If I cd to /appl/fpmerge on existing server and see all my files, time
stamps, etc everything looks good
If I cd to /appl/fpmerge/fpmerge, I see the same exact files and same exact
time stamps
If I cd to /appl/fpmerge/fpmerge, I see the same exact files and same exact
time stamps
So far, I can get to at least this far (I stopped going further than this)
/u/appl/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge/fpmerge
WTF?
I have no clue how this can be with all files being at every level and
having same time stamps etc
Has anyone ever come across this before?
