Index rebuild issue

I had a call from a client this morning with an unusual problem.
Windows Server 2012 and a local Windows 10 computer mapped to the server on drive F:
This is the variable set for the temp folder in his startup batch file:
PFTMP=C:\pftemp (on Local computer) Yes, the folder does exist on all the local computers.
He can rebuild many of the indexes but not others. He is getting an error when running dxmaint about the temp folder. (I have asked him to send me the exact error he is getting).
When he uses remote desktop to log to the server, with the PFTMP=F:\FPTEMP(On server) he does not get the error.
Has anyone seen this behavior?
