If I may clarify also: the essential problem was that the printer
initialization sequence in the printcode table you are using was
incomplete. It did not initialize everything that it should have, and so
it left some things dependent on the default settings in the printer. The
solution proposed by Richard Williams would have worked, but messing with
printcode tables is not for the faint of heart.
Historically, these in-printer defaults (such as lines per page) were
configured using the front panel of the printer. As you discovered, many
recent printers also (instead?) offer access to these defaults via a web
server interface - but that's not available on a USB connection.
