Theoretical questions

1. Application which when there is no name on file will search for a match as one types in letters (like Selectbox()).
The problem that may occur has to do with the English Language, letters that sound alike. Take a name that can begin with an F or PH. There was a commercial bakery in New York names Fink. However that company name could have been Pfink or PHYnQue. All would be pronounced as in Fink. Is there a way to handle this type of issue so that the proper vendor's name appears in the search.
2. How far back does one go to maintain compatibility? I have an filePro application which was written back about 1980 which is still being used. It was installed on a MS-DOS computer and has the same version of Filepro running on a Window7 computer. This same application, later versions of filePro 5.0 to 5.7 are still being used. I have other software I use which became obsolete with Windows 7 and many more with Windows 8. In many cases the newer version of the programs had features that were not compatible with older versions of the OS or could not access new devices.
Two food for thought.
