About 30 years ago, working with Lennie Rosenberg's brother Ted, he got
some very cheap terminals that were supposed to do Wyse emulations. While
they honored the Printer On sequence during pass-through printing, they
passed the Printer On sequence through to the printer which put it in
something like 6in per line spacing. I had to modify my printing routines,
written in C, to send an immediate printer reset then reinitialize it after
every Printer On before sending the actual print data.

At one time I think somebody made a small box that with an RS-232
input and two RS-232 outputs that could be put in the cable
between the server and the terminal whose sole job was to look
for the Printer On and Off sequences to divert output to the
printer or terminal properly.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.
