Changing file corrupted file

I would suggest using fp opt to make a copy of the file with a different name.
Then check this file for ant bad records. If none is found, delete the key and data files and change the field. Then post records to the new file.
The other thing you should is your hard drive. It is possible that it may have bad sectors. The other piece to check is memory. One or both being bad will cause issues.
Also, delete any indexes before posting as building the indexes will slow your posting.
Is the field you are expanding used in any of the indexes? If so, delete them. You would have to rebuild them anyway with the new field size.
Also, try reducing the size of the file for test purposes. Cope the key file to keybak and the delete all but 1,000 records. Then try expanding the field. If this is corrupted , see above.
