Changing file corrupted file

I have a file that has 16 fields in it so it only has key and no data file

I have a field I changed from 3,# to 4.#
It has about 15 million records in it

After it finished it had corrupted the file - there were a lot of
characters like you'd see in a drawn screen corner and the fields were all
garbled...

So I restored the file from backup and ran it again and it did the same
thing?

I've never seen this happen when changing a filePro file layout

Has anyone encountered this or know what may cause this?
