OT: electricity cost (was Re: Sale Strategy)

You know...actually, I think it -is- more than that. That was the cost for
a friends' electric I helped them with when they hit hard times. Ours is
more because I tend to keep the A/C on nearly 24/7 except in the deepest of
winter. My concept of 'thermostat' was binary before last summer.

Just checked a recent budget spreadsheet. Looks like the average is
around $200/mo. Which isn't bad considering my A/C use and -alllll- my
electronics. (I am -not- a candidate for EnergyStar -anything-. My i7
laptop is on in the kitchen 24/7, whether anyone needs it or not, for
example. Speed of access in a crunch or on a whim outweighs minimal cost
of keeping it up.)

1200sqft here. New windows and insulation as of six years ago for the
windows, and a refresher on insulation about a year or two ago.

Tellya what, though... You do -not- know how much heat your electronics
are putting out until it's 95F+ out, the A/C flakes one day, and you're
turning -everything- off to try and coax a few degrees of coolness out of
everything because it hit 102F inside. The cable modem alone puts out a
tremendous amount of heat. I remember shutting down the the main server,
the TV, the NAS, the game consoles, the modem, the router...everything
except a fan. That is a -lot- of heat. There's a reason it's almost
always 10F warmer up here than downstairs, despite having central air.
Especially in summer, central air is code for, "Trying to keep up with
your gear, nevermind the weather." If it's 62F in the kitchen downstairs
(-without- baking/cooking), it's probably 70-72F up here, and it scales
linearly.
