I'll second that. I have a CentOS machine here with several external SATA
hard drives that won't boot unattended. I have to turn off all the
external drives until the BIOS finds the boot drive, then turn them back
on. Usually I then have to use 'mdadm' to reassemble a RAID array on one
of the external chassis.

The last real improvement as I see it was the ability to put
labels on file systems then use the LABEL= options in the boot
and fstab entries. This got around systems that liked to change
the /dev/hd? /dev/sd? entries on some wierd scheme.
