List Status Test-----NEXT QUESTION?

Henry,
My deepest sympathies for your current problem. I can relate.
After spending 25+ years in the Unix (SCO) world using fP, I never found a
problem I couldn't solve with filePro.
Even during the cloud changeover in recent years, there was always a way to
get the job done, on the web, or otherwise.
The common denominator was always having a Unix based platform of some form
or fashion. Fairlite's OneGate was
paramount in getting filePro on the web for me and extended my professional
career for many years before I retired.
You will not find a faster platform, in filePro, to develop on. Period.
The cost of ANY SQL development environment,
on a T&M basis, will bury the budget when replacing a fP app.
For what it's worth, I've always found the Microsoft platform the be
limiting in both performance, and cost. I lost my mind
when I read your post regarding "converting to MS Access". Pure
inexperienced stupidity plain and simple. They obviously have
money to burn and efficiency to lose. You're fighting a similar battle I
faced when I retired, you've become irrelevant in the minds
of ownership. The cause is a lack of glamour and product recognition with
the fP product line. "Is it SQL compliant?" Can't
tell you how many times I heard that one.
In today's world I have fP running on my Apple MacBook under Parallels, and
or VMware, in both a linux (CentOS7) and SCO OSR6 variants.
I no longer consider Microsoft local server platforms anything but expensive
and financially out of reach for the small business owner. They want you
on a subscription basis that times out every year or two and hence, a slave
to their continued subscription based business model. Total dependency to
the cloud.
For that reason, a small business could run a P2V instance on their "Windows
10" client platform for a very long time and also keep fault tolerance
applications such as Backup Edge installed as well. Microlite has great
support for CentOS and other variants of Linux. I just priced a turnkey
hardware Linux Server (CentOS7) with Raid 5 and a couple of midgrade Xeon's,
It's cost was $5500.00 before we ever started to add programming
time and applications.
I guess what I'm trying to say to you is....become a cloud expert and be
ready, as a consultant, for that phone call when it comes. Your company
probably
has not gained a competitive edge on the web that integrates your fP
applications to their business model. Hence "irrelevant".
You can fix that.....assuming they don't spend themselves out of business
first. You're fighting that "It's more cost effective in the CLOUD"
mindset and you won't win. I support that earlier suggestion that you become
a consultant immediately, and watch out for flying egg when the Access
system goes live.
My two cents....

If Windows 11 comes out and FilePro will no longer work on it. What Windows
program do you write the new system in?
Anyone know anything about Filemaker Pro? I keep hearing suggestions about
this software.

On the other hand, my clients have informed me that I am to install a
computer and phone line in my coffin. They want to be able to reach me no
matter where I am.
This goes for vacations also. That's why I try to go to sites where I can't
easily be reached.
By the way, it does not matter if one is moving from filePro or some other
database to a new one. I was hired by a mid-sized Equitable Insurance
agent to advise them on the conversion from Eatable's IBM system 1 system to
a new Windows based network database. There was a program that would move
the data from the old system to the new one. the only major issue was the
old system had a field which was similar to filePro's memo field. Most of
the agencies used this field for other then was it was designed for. They
stored notes, birthdates, anniversaries, etc. in this field. The people
from Equitable Migration Team advised that this data could not be
transferred as it was "free form". I asked why they could not use a memo
type field for this data. They wouldn't or couldn't answer although they
had been asked many times about that issue.
My only solution was for my client was to print out the data in that field.
There was a report on the system that did just that. The new system did
have a place in the new client file to enter important dates and other
information that the agency may want to key on.
