I would be surprized if there isn't a simpler setup by now. Like some file you create purely in your users home dir rather than all the stuff in the directions above.

i have setup a file called filepro.vim in /usr/share/vim/vim74/syntax 
with the same permission as all the other .vim files. My syntax file is 
from the one created by Brian K White. How does my processing tables 
know this is a filepro file to syntax check? - do i simple add a 
commented line with 'Language: file-pro - thanks old tony
