Changing a fields edit type

I have approx. 1.3M records in a database that I'd like to change the edit
type - specifically the two address fields.
Apparently long long ago, the edit types used for these 2 fields is
32,uplow
However, I want to clean these up so people will stop putting all sorts of
punctuation in these fields (i.e. commas, periods, asterisks, etc)
Obviously I can change the edit types without any pain.....but how can I
'enforce' the edit change?
IIRC, just changing the edit type won't 'edit' the existing records, right?
So I'd need to write a process to take the current fields into a variable,
then 're-write' them to the actual field where it will take out the
punctuation that I want removed? Is this the way to go about doing it?
For example, if an address currently has 1234 Main St., Apt. 123
I want the new edit to make this field simply 1234 Main St Apt 123
(removing commas, periods, etc)
Just making sure I understand this before taking this to task this weekend
thanks
Scott
