He could also use:

Field=nn/nn/nnnn or nn-nn-nnn or n-n-nn or n/n/nn

qq=xlate(field,"/-","")

sortValue(8,#)=qq

This will let filePro know that it is sorting a numeric field and not an
alphanumeric field.
 
xlate() will remove any the slash(/) or dash(-) or any other separator
located between the first quotes, which may appear in the date field without
having to worry about the date format and field length.
