OT: Thunderbird and gmail

Thank you for the tips/suggestions.  After searching all around Google, I 
decided to try a different tactic -- rather than asking Google how to fix 
the error, I decided to check Mozilla / Thunderbird to see if they had a 
solution from their end.

I found this:

So it appears that the answer is that there's nothing I can do until 
Thunderbird implements "Google's non-email-standard authentication".
