Thanks to Fairlite and Richard, but in this case, Jim's suggestion was the
most cogent.  It amounted to "are you sure you're solving the right problem?"

In this particular case, the size of a batch is 25-75, and while new data is 
polled from a website every 5 minutes, the daily batch size implies that
if we *build a demand index right before running the interactive process*, we
won't miss a sufficiently large number of entries as to make that an untenable
solution. 

So that's what I'm doing.
