Slightly different flavor of question.
I have several smallish clients where I have installed NAS devices for
document & data storage in lieu of a dedicated server. Making a
backup (Windows network, but both Windows & Linux-based NAS devices)
to take off-site has been a bit of a chore. I have not found a
Windows-based backup utility that can be run from a client, but backup
from the NAS > portable external drive. So for now I have been using
ALLWAYS SYNC to copy data from the NAS to the external drive for
off-site storage. Not a true backup utility but it does offer
compression. Now clients have begun asking instead of backing up the
NAS to an external drive, can we backup to a cloud account. Neither
dropbox nor google drive recommend doing so because they say the file
updates are marked differently on network stored files as opposed to
files residing on a hard drive hosting the OS. So it would appear the
only way to post updated files to the cloud would be to sync them from
the NAS to the dropbox or google drive folder on the client
(manually), then sync to the cloud. Clients prefer an automatic
solution so as to not worry about it. This seems like a lot of effort
to get a worthwhile result, to say nothing of the extra diskspace
being used up on the client. Anyone else facing this issue, and any
better ideas?
