I just realised that the code never actually uses /etc/default/fppath, even
though it reads it.  I borrowed it in a real hurry from something that was
never completely fleshed out.  I also don't use PFDSK.  Not really the
point.  Given the correct environment variables, it should work.  And seems
to work for me.

Out of curiosity, how will read() respond to locked record byte ranges?
Will it return zero, or will it hang until they're unlocked?  (sysread() is
a perl internal wrapper around read(2).)
