There are ~280 people subscribed.  The list runs on a machine servicing
numerous mailing lists.  Not everything gets processed in parallel, either.

That's part of the explanation, though not really the biggest one.

Google's idea of "timely delivery" leaves a lot to be desired.  I get a lot
of delays when sending from my ISP's mail server (which I know to be a
lightning-fast cluster of servers) to GMail.  GMail's inbound is horribly
slow at times.  I never got a bounce last night of of a mail to someone at
GMail, and it still hadn't shown up after 20min.  I finally just put the
file in question on a web server and pasted the URL to them in chat.
