Need help with user command

Maybe this explanation will help someone who is looking at USER
the way I was.
USER track=/usr/bin/gotrack001
track=@rn 'sends script @rn via STDIN
tracknum=track 'returns tracknum via STDOUT
gotrack001 script has:
read tracknum
as one of the first lines.
No one ever explained user to me this way in 30 years or 20 since user
was included.
