Going by that screen shot you have a pretty busted terminal emulator. Maybe
it's just me, but I wouldn't trust anything I saw or typed with the emulator
and the TERM setting you are using. 

If you don't have any money, use PuTTy.
If you want an excellent, commercial grade program with full support, use
Anzio.

You're dropping characters with your current setup. Who knows what you are
really seeing  vs what's actually in the computer.
