Many NIC's allow you to spoof the MAC address.

You could also us the MAC address of the computers NIC.  This may be a better solution the using the drive serial # if booting form different drives.

There are pro and cons to using the NIC.  You can always put the old NIC into a new computer.   Downside, if the NIC goes, you will need to get a new license.  But that the same as if you hard drive goes.

There are some programs out there that will allow you to change a drives serial number.
