question on laptops

There are plenty of good *used* laptops for sale that do not have SATA
drives or other hardware that SCO 5.0.6 may not recognize. (I presume you
meant SCO Openserver version 5.0.6...)
Check the SCO hardware compatibility list if you want to make sure you
get a laptop that is certified for 5.0.6, but it's a short list...
For not much money, you can get him 2 or 3 of the same model of used
laptop, for spare parts. Then you could install a PATA SSD drive in it, or
at least a new non-SSD hard drive and also make a few other embellishments,
like adding more RAM. These laptops should give him several years of
service.
