With even only an 8 or 16GB thumb drive, you might want to be looking
at YUMI:

YUMI is the schidt for people who work on computers: it lets you carry
along a dozen or two DVDs and CDRs full of diagnostic tools on your
keyring.
The only thing, so far, that I have found that I cannot make work is
Windows Ultimate Boot CD: for some reason, it can only be run in ISO
emulator mode, and when it switches to protected mode, it crashes.
The MiniXP that's on an older Hirens seems to work, so I know it *can*
be done; I simply haven't dug into why it won't work.
Still a very handy tool.
