I'm not sure exactly why, but I have BTEP working on one of my twin Galaxy
Tab 8.9s. It seems like I should be able to fix the other one once I'm
home. I didn't really do anything other than set up the RSA key. I'm not
sure why it was crashing before. Been working fine for three days, however.
Nice thing about BTEP is that it will let you multiplex like screen(1) or
like that wrapper that exists around PuTTY, if you use that (I never have;
I know it by repute only).

And this seems to be application specific. I've gotten shells to respond
to the control key proper. Even vi just did. Other times, you must use a
remapped one. It could be the Logitech bluetooth keyboard.
After three solid days of working exclusively from a tablet, I can say two things:
1) For coders and admins, a tablet will never replace a decent desktop/laptop.
2) ConnectBot is a PITA. Investing in BTEP is the way to go if you need an ssh client.
Arguably, my biggest gripe is the lack of simul-view windows, and the pain
of task-switching while trying to copy/paste between them.
