It came down to they had two ideas they were working on
1. a group of misfit computer programmers
2. a girl from the midwest trying making in the big city

They ended up merging the two concepts, and making them  scientists because
they didn't want the story lines to be about chasing money or creating the
latest smartphone app. When I think either Bill or Chuck explained how they
wanted the guys not driven by money it made perfectly good sense.
