I just got a Ricoh Aficio SP C242sf to replace an HP CP2025dn,
and have been very happy with it. This is a multi-function unit
with scanner/copier in addition to duplex printing. It works
nicely with my standard Linux/Unix systems with PCL5 and
PostScript support. There are probably other Ricoh lasers
withuot the scanner or color that might be better for your use.

There was a time when I wouldn't buy anything but HP printers.
My HP 4M Plus laser worked flawlessly from 1995 through 2012, and
is still functional. Perhaps their high-end lasers are still OK,
but the ones I've seen for less than $1,000 are shoddy, and HP's
support is a joke.

The HP printer was less than a year old when my wife broke
something in the duplex mechanism while loading paper. When I
took it in for repair the shop couldn't get a replacement part
from HP so my printer is only partly functional (it won't pick up
paper from the auxiliary tray). This, and the horrible support
that HP has on drivers for old scanners, has convinced me that I
will never buy anything from HP again. The other major issue
with this printer is toner cost, over $450 for 4 cartridges.

One of the major advantages of the Ricoh is that toner is much
less expensive than the HP.

I've used quite a few Ricoh printers and scanners going back to
the Radio Shack Daisy Wheel II, and never had problems with them.
