I have 2 x m401dn in service as network printers using linux / sco /
windows machines
not the fastest printer in the world, pretty quiet, no problems so far.

None of my customers needs color printing. I'm hesitant to suggest
color printers because of the higher printing costs per page.
Since I'm specifically looking for printers that can be printed to
directly from Linux over a network without requiring any Windows printer
drivers, do you think the LJ Pro 400 will work in that situation? As I
recall, you work mostly with the Windows version of filePro...
