Sanity check failure! (second posting)

which is the latest forum mail that I see on the subject. So it sounds 
this error is an after-effect of some process that is corrupting an index.

Can anyone tell me what a Sanity check error is and what may have caused it?  This is the first time this client, as well as any of my clients, have seen this error message.
