For Mac users, I strongly recommend the SuperDuper! backup
software and iPartition.

The iPartition program is particularly useful as it makes it easy
to work with partitions on the Mac, and, most important, it can
change the boot type on an external from the old PowerPC to Intel
and back again.

When I replaced my old Titanium Powerbook with a Macbook Pro 3
years ago, I bought a LaCie Quadra external HD which has FireWire
400, FireWire 800, USB, and eSata interfaces. It was easy to
create multiple partitions on the LaCie, use SuperDuper to make a
complete backup of the TiBook, then use Migration Assistant to
get everything onto the Macbook Pro.

I had to repartition the Macbook Pro to create a large case
sensitive file system while leaving the base OS as case
insensitive to allow brain-dead software from Adobe to install.

The iPartition program was invaluable here as it allowed me to
switch the boot type of the LaCie back and forth for the two
machines while playing the repartition games.
