cloning or imaging a new hard drive

You don't mention what type of hard drive you have. You also don't
mention which operating system is on your laptop, so I will assume it is a
recent version of Microsoft Windows. If so, you should look into something
like Apricorn's EZ-Up hard drive upgrade kit for laptops. It not only
includes cloning software, but it also includes an external drive case so
that you can turn your old drive into a USB backup drive.
Disclamer: Although these copy methods don't remove the data off of
your old drive, I'd still suggest making sure you have your laptop backed up
on some other device before you begin. It can be very tricky removing a
hard drive out of a laptop and it is quite easy to damage the drive or the
laptop.
