Parsing US Driver License (Plain Text)

Can anyone share info or reference as to data mapping on US Driver
Licenses?  Also, if you know of a reader(s) you can recommend, that
would be nice.

I bought an M310 some time ago but it comes at a heavy price and the
software (veriscan) is too limited for what I wish to do (being a
programmer I became an instant critic).

I found

but I cannot understand how the delimer fields that are of "variable"
length.  I am not even sure ALL US Licenses are compliance to AAMVA as
per linked document.
