ddefine not creating files

Upgrading from SCO to Linux  filepro  5.7.00D4 (reported by ddefine).

I'm unable to create new filepro files using ddefine.   It's not creating
the required directory.
If I manually create the required directory (sudo'ed to user 'filepro')
then ddefine will create and edit the map.

The error message:

*** A System Error Has Occurred ***

Cannot open file.
/home/datafp/filepro/xxx/map: No such file or directory

ddefine is
-rwsr-xr-x 1 filepro root 583184 May 31  2011 ddefine
lib/makedir
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root sys 37092 Oct 10  2001 makedir

What am I missing?

Calls and emails to fptech have brought no response.
