This spring XP boxes that had up to date versions of AVG still got
infected by "fake alert" virus.
Sometimes the only way to clean things up is to run AntiMalwarebytes in
order to run a anti-virus
that we only could get off with Microsoft Security Essentials and not
with fresh install of AVG.
Aggressive (by moving to daily scans and updates) seems to completely
rid me of people who clicked on something
that installed a fake alert type virus. Once a week scan and updates was
not enough to block new stuff,
after we went daily it has never happened since.
Maybe fake alert type is passé, and what I think is fine is really infected.
