I have been one of those people.

Locking record 0,  while filepro rebuilds the freechain on a several million 
row table is frustrating to users.

My desire for filepro would be:

PFNOFREECHAIN=yes    #disables freechain, new records are appended.

or

on freechain error,  filepro automatically goes into a "limp" mode and 
appends records to the key file, until the freechain can be rebuilt during a 
maintenance cycle.

or

PFBATCHADDRECORDS=no    #this disables the batch add records mode, allowing 
the user to add one record to the table.  upon escape escape the user is 
kept on the record they just completed.   I realize you can program to mimic 
this behavior, but why?
