The new iMacs will support three physical screens, although I
typically have > 25 xterms open on my Macbook Pro with a 24in
1920x1200 Hyundai monitor.  It has plenty of area to have related
screens visible side-by-side.

Running X11 applications on the Macs is trivial.  We always do
this using ssh with X11 forwarding because it's so much easier
than dealing with DISPLAY and the related security issues when
attempting to do it without X11.
