While I would find it unusual that Bill wouldn't have told him that Howie is 
a "real person", even without "the entire back story", it's certainly possible.

As for Howie's permission, I understand that Bill's position was that, while 
not strictly necessary from a legal standpoint, he asked as a courtesy, and 
Howie consented.

P.S. Does anyone on this list have an old "Think small" shirt, preferably in 
Sheldon's size?
