Even if that's true (and I'm not certain it is), that wouldn't explain why
it slows down to 1/12th the speed when a second user is on:

And, unless processing is doing a huge amount of work on every record, two
records a second is extremely slow to begin with.
Note that I don't have any Win2008 systems. I am, however, on a 64-bit Win7
box.
