He was convinced it's a dinosaur. I don't know where the 16-bit came from,
short filenames? There was also mention of a "switch". I'm having them

So it's Windows native then. 

Thanks for your feedback, and to everyone else for your input. The fact that
so many are not having this issue is enlightening.
