Hmm...

Cut NASA'a budget so they can't really do much.  Give the NSF $900 million 
less than requested.  Pass the "No Child Gets Ahead Act".  Have people who 
"aren't sure about evolution" as presidential candidates for a major 
political party.  And so on...

And then wonder "why do we keep falling behind the rest of the world when it 
comes to math, science, engineering, and so on".
